Our Small Native American style Backpacker Drone Flutes are beautifully handcrafted, easy to play, and perfect for travel, hiking, or backpacking. Despite their compact size, these poplar wood flutes produce a rich, clear tone that’s both calming and expressive — a favorite among beginners and experienced players alike.
Each flute is made from sustainably sourced Poplar hardwood, known for its light weight and smooth, even sound. Every instrument is hand-finished with our non-toxic natural oil-and-wax blend — no synthetic or harmful finishes, ever. The finish color may vary slightly as each flute is individually handmade, giving every piece its own character.
These drone flutes feature a dual-chamber design with a thumb hole on the back of the drone side, adding an additional note to the drone chamber. This allows the player to produce the base note of the scale (for example, A on an A flute), the major tonic (C on an A flute), and, when played with a faster breath, the upper octave of the base note (high A). This setup gives the instrument a wonderfully layered and resonant harmony.
Our 5-hole Native American style design on the melody side is comfortable and intuitive to play. There’s no “extra hole” to cover with leather, and these flutes play all the same notes as any 6-hole flute — with ease! Whether you’re new to the flute or a seasoned musician, you’ll find it simple to create beautiful, traditional-style melodies within hours of practice.
