What if you could turn a simple piece of 3/4 inch PVC pipe into a playable Native American style flute in just minutes? This is not a completed playable flute, only the mechanism to aid in building your own.
This is my new 3D printable mouthpiece and sound mechanism attachment designed specifically for standard 3/4 inch PVC tubing. This snap-on design allows anyone to create a functional PVC flute in multiple tunings including G, F#, and E - without needing advanced flute-making tools or years of experience.
What is included - this product currently comes in 3 options:
Complete 2 piece kit - the BBF Tone Box and Integrated Block
BBF Tone Box only - if you prefer to use your own flat block
Integrated Block only - if you purchased the Tone Box only and change your mind to use my block design, it is still available to purchase later (this piece alone will not make a flute)

The goal of this project is simple: make flute building more accessible, affordable, and fun for everyone.
The attachment is designed to:
Snap directly onto standard 3/4 inch PVC pipe
Work with multiple flute lengths and tunings
Provide a consistent sound mechanism
Help beginners start making music quickly
Give makers and experimenters a platform to customize their own flute designs
I’m also offering the STL print file FREE here on my website for anyone with a 3D printer. If you don’t have a printer, pre-printed versions are also available.

Construction
These Tone Boxes are made from PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol), chosen for its durability, stability, and safety for use with breath and moisture. PETG is commonly used in food-safe and medical-related applications and offers greater heat resistance and longevity than PLA.
You may notice a subtle surface texture - this is a natural result of the seamless construction process, where the Tone Box is formed as a continuous piece to ensure consistency and structural integrity.
Learn & Explore
Each flute includes basic playing guidance. Additional demonstrations, tips, and musical examples are available on the Blue Bear Flutes YouTube channel.
Shipping
Free shipping within the USA and its territories, with affordable international shipping available worldwide. See our Shipping page for details.
Community & Usage
The free Tone Box print file is being shared to help make flute building more accessible and to encourage creativity within the maker and flute communities. It can be found on the Blue Bear Flutes Tone Box page.
My only request is this: if you download the free file from my website or from any 3D printing community where I’ve shared it, please do not sell the Tone Box by itself as a standalone printed item.
However, if you use the Tone Box as part of a completed flute build - adding the PVC body, finger holes, tuning, finishing work, or your own creative design - you are absolutely welcome to sell the completed instrument. Also, Please do not remove, cover up or hide my Bear Symbol from the back of the Tone Box!
This project is meant to inspire experimentation, learning, and music-making. If you enjoy the design and later consider purchasing a handcrafted wooden flute or one of our other instruments, I hope you’ll keep Blue Bear Flutes in mind.

Additional Information
What You’ll Need
To complete your flute, you’ll need:
-
Standard 3/4 inch PVC pipe
-
A drill and drill bits
-
The supplied finger hole measurements
-
Sandpaper or basic finishing tools (optional)
That’s it. No specialized flute-making equipment is required.
Designed for Experimentation
One of the biggest advantages of the Tone Box system is flexibility. Because the sound mechanism remains consistent, you can experiment with:
-
different flute lengths
-
alternate tunings
-
custom hole spacing
-
ergonomic layouts
-
decorative finishes
-
travel or compact flute designs
This makes the project ideal for hobbyists, educators, makerspaces, classrooms, and anyone interested in acoustic experimentation.
Beginner Friendly
Traditional flute making can require years of experience to consistently produce a clean, stable sound mechanism. The Tone Box removes much of that complexity, allowing beginners to focus on learning tuning, spacing, airflow, and musical playability without first mastering the most difficult part of flute construction.
Open Source Philosophy
This project was created to encourage creativity and accessibility in flute making. The free downloadable STL file allows makers around the world to print, experiment with, and learn from the design while developing their own instruments and ideas.
About PVC Flutes
PVC has become a popular material among flute makers and experimental instrument builders because it is:
-
inexpensive
-
lightweight
-
weather resistant
-
easy to work with
-
acoustically consistent
When properly tuned and designed, PVC flutes can produce a surprisingly warm and expressive sound while remaining extremely affordable and durable.
Compatibility
The Tone Box is specifically designed for standard 3/4 inch PVC tubing. Performance may vary with different pipe dimensions or manufacturers, though standard Schedule 40 PVC generally works very well.
Handmade Design Origins
Although this project uses modern materials and 3D printing technology, the underlying voicing, tuning concepts, and sound mechanism geometry come directly from decades of flute-making experience and development through Blue Bear Flutes.
