Blue Bear Modern Series 4-Hole Native American Style Whistle
These Blue Bear Modern Series 4-hole whistles are a compact and expressive instrument rooted in traditional design and expanded through modern construction. Based on forms historically associated with Southeastern Native American cultures * and also found in parts of Mexico * this whistle offers a simple, intuitive playing experience with surprising musical range.
I’ve wanted to offer this style of instrument with the Quetzalcoatl Design for some time, and the Modern Series makes it possible to do so in a consistent and accessible way while preserving the musical intent behind the design.
Each whistle is tuned to a minor pentatonic scale, allowing for natural, flowing melodies. Despite its simplicity, the instrument has a range of approximately one and a half octaves and can easily explore major and chromatic tones with breath control and technique.
These whistles measure approximately 7 inches in length, with a body diameter of about ½ inch, making them comfortable to hold and easy to carry, even in your pocket!
They are available in two versions:
- Standard whistle – clean, simple, and traditional in appearance
- Quetzalcoatl edition – featuring a detailed serpent head inspired by Mesoamerican imagery
Both versions play the same and share identical tuning and performance.
Each whistle is produced in a Bone White PETG, giving it a clean, natural look while offering durability and resistance to moisture.
While these models do not include a necklace cord, one can easily be added based on your personal preference.
Design & Playability
The 4-hole design is one of the most approachable flute styles, requiring minimal finger movement while still offering expressive musical control. The minor pentatonic tuning allows players to create pleasing melodies naturally, without the need for complex fingering patterns.
With proper breath control, the instrument can reach into higher registers and explore additional tonal possibilities, including major and chromatic variations.
Tuning
These whistles are rudimentarily tuned to a minor pentatonic scale with a range of approximately 1.5 octaves, offering both simplicity and versatility. Tuned roughly to A = 440 Hz for compatibility with other instruments. Keep in mind breath control changes the on this instrument.
Care
These whistles require very little maintenance. Keep them clean, dry, and stored safely when not in use. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
Construction
These instruments are made from PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol), selected for its strength, stability, and safety for use with breath and moisture. PETG is commonly used in food-safe and medical-related applications and offers greater heat resistance and longevity than PLA.
A subtle surface texture may be present—this is a natural result of the seamless construction process, where the whistle is formed as a continuous piece to ensure consistency and structural integrity.
