Our Blue Bear Modern Series Native American style drone flutes represent a thoughtful balance of tradition and innovation. Built from my original flute designs, these instruments carry the same tuning, spacing, and voicing I’ve developed over decades—now offered in a form that allows for consistent builds and expanded availability.
These flutes are currently available in the key of High B, a bright, clear voice that is easy to play and well-suited for both beginners and experienced players. Additional keys will be introduced over time.
Each flute is available in two visual styles:
Matte Oak – a soft, natural matte finish
Glossy Brown – a deeper, polished look
You may also choose between:
Standard version (no totem) for a clean, simple design
Turtle totem version, adding a symbolic and visual element to the instrument
The Modern Series flutes are designed to play smoothly and respond easily, with a tone that remains true to the character of my handcrafted instruments. While the material differs from wood, the focus on playability, tuning accuracy, and musical expression remains the same.
These instruments also allow for designs and configurations that are not always practical to produce by hand, making them a versatile addition to the Blue Bear flute line.
Design & Playability
Built from my established Native American style drone flute designs, these instruments are comfortable to hold, easy to learn, and expressive to play. The finger placement and tuning follow the same principles used in my handcrafted flutes.
Tuning
All flutes are tuned to 440 Hz, the standard and preferred tuning for most players.
Care
These flutes require minimal maintenance compared to wood instruments. Store in a safe, dry place and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
Construction
We use PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) rather than PLA because it offers greater durability, stability, and safety for an instrument that comes into regular contact with the mouth, moisture and breath. PETG is widely used in food-safe and medical-related applications, does not break down as easily over time, and is more heat resistant than PLA, making it a more reliable material for long-term use. You may notice a gentle texture on the surface of the flute; this is a natural result of the seamless construction process, when the instrument is formed helping ensure consistency and structural integrity. While very BEAUTIFUL, these flutes are made to be incredibly DURABLE also!
