The Blue Bear Flutes Beginner 5-Hole Native American Style Flute is our most versatile, easy-to-play instrument—perfect for first-time players, classroom learning, recording artists, and seasoned performers alike. Compact, affordable, and full of tone, it’s the ideal introduction to the Native American style flute.
Handcrafted from sustainably grown poplar hardwood, each flute measures about 18 inches long and 1 inch in diameter, making it comfortable to hold and travel-friendly. The wood is stained with a natural, non-toxic finish and sealed with our bee’s-wax and oil blend for lasting protection and beautiful tone. Each flute also includes our signature Bear Totem, left unstained for a natural contrast and timeless look.
Inspired by traditional river-cane flutes played for thousands of years, these instruments feature an open-style mouthpiece that gives players complete control over airflow and tone. Simply rest the mouthpiece on your lower lip and gently direct air into the opening—no complicated technique required. This design mimics the natural playing method of early cane flutes, allowing beginners to sound great within minutes and advanced players to refine precise tonal control.
Our 5-hole system plays all the same notes as a 6-hole flute, but with an easier, more intuitive layout—no leather hole covers needed. Whether you’re new to flute playing or a professional performer, this design makes playing smooth, expressive, and effortless.
Each flute is custom made to order in our Family workshop and tuned to the key of High B, offering a clear, uplifting voice that’s full of life. Maintenance is simple—just apply a light coat of mineral or olive oil to keep your flute in perfect condition.
