I'm (not) running out of ideas for videos!

Creating and sharing has been a part of my life for nearly four decades. As someone who has dedicated themselves to making Native American flutes for almost 38 years, it's not just a craft; it's a passion that colors every aspect of my existence. For the last 15 years, I’ve turned to YouTube to share this journey, connecting with a vibrant community of flute enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
Throughout these years, I've been amazed by the constant flow of inspiration. Each call from a customer seeking advice often leads me to say, "I have a video on that." Every interaction holds the potential for fresh content.
The Wealth of Topics
When it comes to Native American flutes, my videos cover a wide range of topics, with countless tutorials on making and playing flutes. For example, I have detailed instructions on crafting different types of flutes, of various materials, each producing unique sounds. Customers frequently inquire about maintenance; I've created videos on common issues, such as how to fix cracking and how to properly maintain your flute.
I even cover eco-friendly practices, like our sustainable packaging, which surprised many. Approximately 80% of our customers expressed interest in the environmental impact of their purchases.

The community spirit surrounding these instruments is invigorating. Whenever I hear a specific question during a call or through social media (or even a comment on another video), I think about creating a video response. This leads to genuine interaction with my viewers, many of whom want to learn how to play the Native American flute or make specific adjustments. For instance, I had a viewer request a video on adjusting the flute’s tuning to "432 hz". That video became one of my most popular. (https://youtu.be/-e5eZglcGME)
Limitless Material
While there are certain exceptions, The Art of Native American Flute Making (also the name of my book on the subject), along with the broader context of music, culture, and history, offers vast fields of ideas. It’s not just about the flutes themselves; they carry stories that resonate through time. Each flute acts as a vessel of culture, and I draw inspiration from global practices.
I’m fortunate that my creative well never runs dry; in fact, I thrive on insights from the community. With so many elements to explore, the challenge is not a lack of ideas but rather managing the time to bring these concepts to life.
Time Constraints
As a small, family-owned workshop dedicated to crafting high-quality flutes, we split our time between production and content creation. Our passionate team often brainstorms new video topics, yet the frantic pace of our workweek pulls us away from filming. We maintain a list of upcoming ideas, hoping to find spare moments for filming. Each discussion about potential videos aims to keep them authentic and engaging, perfectly reflecting our down-home feel.
The Art of Connection
Creating content goes beyond sharing information; it’s about building connections. Each video becomes a dialogue with my community, allowing me to explore their interests. The most rewarding aspect is tailoring videos based on viewer feedback. When someone asks how to play a particular tune or what modifications can enhance their flute’s sound, I seize the opportunity. For example, after receiving numerous requests on creating a specific song tutorial, I produced a step-by-step video that sparked enthusiasm among my audience.
Our Checklist for Video Creation
Having a checklist for creating content helps us stay organized and efficient. We outline topics, potential filming locations, key points, and ways to keep it personal. Our aim is to make our content a shared experience, rather than just a polished tutorial.
The challenge lies in balancing quality with frequency. We want our videos to reflect our expertise but also to remain approachable.
Encouragement for the Community
As you dive into the world of Native American flutes, I encourage you to reach out. Whether you're curious about how to play or need advice on maintenance, your questions fuel my creativity!
Together, we can explore the melody of life embodied in these flutes. Each note carries a piece of history, connecting the past to the present. Your queries not only give me fresh content ideas but also enhance the learning experience for our growing community.
Final Thoughts
Reflecting on nearly four decades of making Native American flutes, I remain energized by the creativity around me and the engaging community I serve. The array of questions from my customers shows just how limitless the journey of learning can be.
While I would love to produce videos every day, being a small, dedicated team means time is a precious resource. Every idea is noted down, waiting for its moment to shine.
I look forward to continuing our journey together while nurturing our shared love for Native American flutes. Let's keep exploring this beautiful world through music, culture, and the stories hidden within each note.
Thank you for being part of this adventure!
