The Blue Bear Modern Series Native American style flutes bring together decades of design experience with a modern approach to construction. Based on my original flute designs, these instruments maintain the same tuning, spacing, and voicing I’ve developed over the years—now offered in a form that allows for consistent results and broader availability.

At this time, these flutes are offered in the key of High B, a bright and clear voice that is easy to play and enjoyable for both new and experienced players. Additional keys will be added as the series continues to grow.

Each flute is available in two finish options:

  • Flat Oak – a smooth, understated matte appearance

  • Glossy Brown – a richer, more polished look

You may also choose between:

  • Standard (no totem) for a clean, traditional profile

  • Turtle totem version, offering a distinctive visual and symbolic touch

These flutes are designed for smooth response and dependable playability, with a tone that reflects the character of my handcrafted instruments. While they are made using a different material, the same attention to tuning, balance, and musical expression remains at the core of each design.

The Modern Series also makes it possible to explore new variations and configurations that would require significantly more time to produce by hand, expanding what can be offered to players.

Design & Playability

Derived from my established Native American style flute designs, these instruments are comfortable to hold, intuitive to learn, and expressive across a wide range of playing styles. Finger placement and tuning follow the same principles used in my handcrafted flutes.

Tuning

All flutes are tuned to 440 Hz, the standard tuning and my preferred reference for consistency and compatibility.

Care

Compared to wood instruments, these flutes require very little maintenance. Simply keep them clean, dry, and stored safely, avoiding extended exposure to extreme heat.

Construction

These flutes are made using PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) rather than PLA due to its superior strength, stability, and safety for instruments that come into contact with the mouth, moisture, and breath. PETG is commonly used in food-safe and medical-related applications, resists heat better than PLA, and maintains its integrity over time. You may notice a subtle surface texture—this is a natural result of the seamless construction process, where the flute is formed as a continuous piece to ensure consistency and structural reliability.
