Many players are drawn to the rich, resonant tone and striking beauty of our Old-Style Purpleheart 5-Hole Native American style flute. Purpleheart wood is known for its deep violet hue and naturally dense grain, giving this flute a bright, clear voice with excellent projection and a slightly sharper edge compared to softer woods like cedar.
Like all of our Old-Style models, this flute features an open mouthpiece design — instead of a narrow blow hole, the mouth opening is the same size as the flute’s interior. This design, inspired by traditional rivercane flutes, allows you to simply press your lips against the end and blow, offering greater control of tone and airflow while helping prevent the flute from “wetting out.”
Each flute includes our flat/standard block on top, and you can personalize it with a custom totem from our Totems page. Our 5-hole flutes play all the same notes as 6-hole flutes — you can learn more about that on our 6-Hole Flute page.
This model is offered in the key of high B (as demonstrated in the video), and can be tuned to 432Hz or 528Hz upon request instead of the standard 440Hz. Just leave a note with your order.
Every flute is custom-made to order, hand-finished with our exclusive natural oil-and-wax blend that enhances the beauty of the wood and preserves its tone without the drawbacks of lacquer. For ongoing care, we recommend our Imitation Bear Fat or natural oils such as mineral or olive oil.
