Wow! What an instrument! The Contrabass Key Western Cedar Native American style flutes from Blue Bear Flutes are designed so that almost anyone can play and enjoy their deep, haunting voice. While bass flutes are often difficult for beginners, our design (with three finger holes in front and two in back for the thumbs) makes it possible for anyone with medium or larger hands to play comfortably.

These handcrafted flutes are available in low C, low B, and low A (from highest to lowest tone), each built from high-quality Western Red Cedar. Large flutes naturally require more material and work than smaller ones, but the sound they deliver — powerful, resonant, and unforgettable — makes them well worth the investment. Be sure to check out our demonstration video to hear them in action!

At Blue Bear Flutes, we’re proud to offer instruments that are both accessible and legendary in craftsmanship. Every flute is custom made to order and finished with our natural oil wax — giving you a unique instrument that is made just for you.

By default, our keyed contrabass flutes are tuned to 440Hz, but we also offer 432Hz and 528Hz “C” tuning options at no extra cost.

Your order includes free online playing instructions, free U.S. shipping, and affordable worldwide delivery.

  • Western Red Cedar is a classic flute wood, valued for its mellow, smooth tone and easy care. Our contrabass flutes range from 28–34 inches depending on the key — smaller sizes give higher tones, while the larger ones produce the deepest bass.

To keep your flute in top condition, we recommend adding a container of our Imitation Bear Fat Flute Wax and a flute bag for protection. For sound samples, fingering charts, and other helpful resources, visit our Info Page
